Fritzgaertner's Flat
Laguna Atascosa NWR, Rio Hondo, Texas

25 November 2003

This butterfly was found by Susan Hengeveld on our BIRDING trip to South Texas. I took the photo on a whim, since Susan, her husband Jim Hengeveld, my wife Joanne and I were all trying to figure out just what it was! Susan and Jim had started butterflying this year and Joanne and I hadn't really done any. Joanne's earlier find of a Guava Skipper (photos to come) helped get us interested along with some nice butterflies that we were shown by DAVE HANSON who was there at Laguna.

Dave had to leave before we ran into this Flat (sorry Dave!), but luckily we ran into Ellie Thompson a few minutes later! She looked and the photo on my camera and got VERY interested! With a little help from her, and the luck of FINDING the Flat again an hour later, it was CONFIRMED. Ellie got a much better shot and sent it off to NABA experts. You can see her shot here.
